The search for the most effective hair loss cure has become a major concern among men. While it is thought that hair loss is one of the physical changes brought about by ageing, a lot of people, especially men are experiencing hair loss even in their 20s or 30s. This premature hair loss may be caused by a number of factors.
Fortunately, there is a wide range of treatment approach for hair loss available to us now. Hair loss is not a disease, but rather a manifestation of an underlying problem and it varies from one person to another. It is therefore important to identify the cause of hair loss in order to determine the most effective treatment approach.
Androgenic Alopecia: It is a hereditary condition wherein the body converts testosterone into DHT, a hormone that attacks hair follicles, causing them to shrink. Over time, the damaged hair follicles stop producing hair.
Rx: Androgen Blockers – these hair loss treatment products are especially designed to stop hair loss and promote hair growth in people with androgenic alopecia. DHT Blockers inhibits the enzyme called 5-alpha reductase from converting testosterone to DHT.
Examples of Androgen Blockers are: Procerin, Adovart, and Propecia.
Chronic Illness: Hair loss may also be a result of chronic illnesses like Diabetes, Lupus Erythematosus, Hyperthyroidism and Hypothyroidism.
Rx: It is essential to adhere to the prescribed medication and treatment plan for these diseases in order to minimize, if not prevent the complications of these conditions. If hair loss due to any of these diseases is so severe that it can affect self-image, express this concern to your physician who will then recommend which product or treatment for hair loss is most appropriate. NOTE: Do not self-medicate as some products may contain ingredients that may have negative interaction with the medications you are taking.
Telogen Effluvium: This is characterized by massive shedding or hair (more than 100 strands in a day). This is an acute condition which is normally seen in people who has undergone severe stress, surgery, childbirth, and crash diet.
Rx: This is a self-limiting condition and therefore no especial action needs to be taken. New hair will grow and everything will be back to normal. If a large percentage of hair has fallen off, using hair growers such as Rogaine and Provillus will promote hair growth.
Chemotherapy: Hair loss is one of the dreaded side effects of chemotherapy in cancer patients. While chemotherapy drugs kill cancer cells, it also harms normal cells, especially the ones that grow rapidly – the hair cells.
Rx: There is no way hair loss can be prevented while chemotherapy is on-going. Hair growth products will not have any effect since the drugs will kill the hair cells anyway. Hair growth is expected to return to normal after chemotherapy. At this point you can consider hair growers like Rogaine and Provillus to promote hair growth.
In more advanced cases of hair loss wherein hair follicles are severely damaged, laser or surgical hair restoration procedure may be necessary. These are very effective hair loss cure but it can be very expensive depending on the degree of baldness. It is recommended to use non-invasive treatment regimen first for at least 2 years before considering surgical restoration.
